A graduate student from Roanoke, a Huntington University (HU) nursing student, and a Wabash County high school student who will study nursing at HU have been awarded Parkview Huntington Spirit of Service Scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year.

Rachel Hiple, left, Brianna Shane, center, and Addy Rosen, right, were each selected to receive a $1,500 scholarship.

Launched in 2019, the Spirit of Service Scholarship continues a long tradition of support for area residents pursuing post-secondary studies in the healthcare field. Funding comes from proceeds of the operation of the Parkview Huntington Hospital (PHH) gift shop. The program is administered by Parkview Huntington Foundation, and the recipients were selected by a review panel that included representatives from the foundation’s board of directors, the PHH volunteer corps, hospital leadership and the community.

Students pursuing degree programs in healthcare-related fields are eligible for Spirit of Service scholarships. The scholarships are available to Huntington County high school seniors or residents, students who are employed full-time in Huntington County, and students enrolled at Huntington University.

Rachel Hiple, a 2015 graduate of Huntington North High School, earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, with majors in interdisciplinary health services and Spanish. She is in the final year of a master’s degree program that will prepare her for a career as a bilingual physician assistant (PA). At Western Michigan, Hiple was part of a study program in Spain, received several awards and recognition from the university’s Department of Spanish, and was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national academic honor society.

Brianna Shane is completing her sophomore year at Huntington University this spring. She is a Huntington resident and a 2020 graduate of Huntington North High School. She completed a healthcare internship at PHH during her senior year that helped spark her interest in nursing. She has also worked and volunteered at Heritage Pointe in Warren, has served on the wait staff of the Country Post restaurant in Huntington for four years, and is a 10-year member of 4-H.

Addy Rosen, an Urbana resident, will begin her nursing studies at HU in the fall semester. She has been involved in sports throughout high school and was a member of Northfield High School’s 2021 state championship softball team. Like Shane, she is a 10-year member of 4-H, having shown sheep and swine and won livestock champion and showmanship honors at the past two Wabash County 4-H fairs. Rosen hopes to become the third generation of her family to enter nursing, following the career paths of her grandmother and her mother.
