They’re a part of an inexplicable paradox.

An impressive number of residents of Heritage Pointe of Huntington senior living community cannot be dissuaded by geography, record, sensibility, history or any other logical factors. Through thick or thin, rhyme or reason, win or lose (more often lose), the residents are the epitome of die-hard Chicago Cubs baseball fans.

Brad Fuller, Activity Director at Heritage Pointe of Huntington, is surprised at, amused by, and obliging for the residents. He recalled that when the broadcast for Cubs games moved from WGN to Marquee Network, there could theoretically have been an uprising. “Residents requested that we find a way to get the network on our TV system,” he recalled. “A new upgraded system was installed, which provided a number of benefits to the residents, including accessibility to watch the Cubs games broadcasts.”

In addition to decorating their apartments and hallways, dressing, and even getting manicures in Cubs colors and designs, there are fans who “won’t miss a game,” said Fuller. “They are fans in good times and bad times, 24 hours/day and 365 days/year. They fanatically love their team.”

Resident Rex Tribolet recalls listening to Cubs games on the radio when he was a young boy. Sixty or so years ago, he started watching them on TV. He said he’s been to more than a dozen games at Wrigley Field and fondly recalls sitting in the three-hour stopped traffic on Lake Shore Drive as the crowds dispersed afterward.

Judy Thurston, also a resident of the senior living community, plans her days around the Cubs schedule. Faithfully wearing Cubs gear, she will watch all games live and then stream them again the next day.

All the resident fans agree that watching the Cubs win the 2016 World Series was their favorite memory. “I waited a lifetime to see that happen. I felt like my life was complete,” Thurston said, flaunting her replica championship ring, her most prized possession.

Fuller said he likes supporting the residents’ unwavering dedication to the team. “We’ll have tailgate parties and special events to celebrate the Cubs fans. Whatever our residents love, we like to encourage!”

Disappointed but not swayed by the fact that the Cubs will not make the 2024 playoffs, the residents will remain avid fans for the rest of the season.
