Heritage Days 2025, June 11 through June 15, will celebrate the people of Huntington and how they care for one another with the theme, “A Heritage of Caring.” Over the years many individuals, businesses and organizations have united the community in caring for one another. Each week the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce will highlight one of these entities in this column.

“Huntington County Council on Aging’s mission is to help older and disabled residents of Huntington County to facilitate a lifestyle of dignity and independence,” and has been caring about the needs of senior residents and persons with disabilities, aged 60 and over, since 1973.

Caring services are provided through homemaking, foot care, transportation, education on topics important to the aging population and more. Opportunities are also available to participants for community involvement and social activities. The Senior Center, 500 MacGahan Street, is the location for meeting with friends and participating in the Council on Aging’s programs.

Care in the home can also be arranged through the Senior Center, and the Senior Expo is organized through its staff. Huntington Area Transportation (HAT) is available to everyone in Huntington County, and is the only public transit system offered. Transportation is provided to work, shopping, medical appointments, school and more.

The Council on Aging also has a blog and newsletter that detail the activities of the Senior Center and offer information of interest to seniors. Walking groups, chair aerobics, Euchre, line dancing, Bingo and more are offered through the Senior Center.

Jessica Huscher is the executive director of the Council of Aging with Dick Murray assistant director. Lisa Harbuck is the transportation director and Jenny Barry is the office assistant. A variety of individuals assist with HAT driving and homemaking. A board, with John Niederman as director, oversees the Council on Aging. Caring volunteers also meet the needs of seniors throughout Huntington.
