Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne (Habitat GFW) is excited to announce that its Aluminum Can Recycling program has been ranked the third-largest among 52 Habitat affiliates nationwide. Through this community-driven initiative, the program raised an impressive $15,944 in 2024, contributing to affordable homeownership opportunities for families in Greater Fort Wayne.

“Ranking #3 is a huge accomplishment for our community, and it speaks to the dedication of our local supporters and volunteers who are passionate about recycling and making a difference,” said Dannielle Goodrich, Habitat GFW Marketing Manager. “What I love most about this program is how easy it is for anyone to recycle and help Habitat families – every can counts!”

The Habitat Can Shed program, which operates year-round, includes 16 convenient can shed locations across Allen County. More shed locations will be added in 2025 thanks to the support from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish and their Carpenter’s Sons Ministry. Locations to drop off cans can be found at habitatgfw.com/cans.

Habitat cardboard bins (50 gallon) are also available to utilize indoors to help collect large quantities of cans and can be requested from the organization by emailing info@habitatgfw.com. Huntington County residents can easily drop off collected cans at Clark’s Recycling in Huntington and allocate their donation to Habitat GFW.

Unfortunately, the program is currently facing a challenge. Last week, Habitat’s Can Shed truck was vandalized while parked at the Habitat ReStore. The older truck, which has been a workhorse for the program, was already experiencing mechanical issues and due to the vandalism, it’s clear that the truck has reached the end of its lifespan.

“Our can shed truck has seen better days, but we’ve relied on it for collecting cans and keeping the program going. Sadly, the recent damage means it’s no longer usable,” shared Dannielle Goodrich, Habitat GFW Marketing Manager. “We’re turning this into an opportunity to upgrade to the bigger box truck we’ve been dreaming of a vehicle that will make collecting cans even easier for our volunteers and help the program continue to grow.”

To support this fundraising effort, donations are being accepted at here, with all funds going toward the purchase of a new vehicle to ensure the Can Shed program can continue its vital work in the community.
