Pathfinder envisions a community where every person is valued, accepted and empowered to control their own destiny. Through their Independent Living Initiative, they support individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve greater independence, utilizing innovative technology, creative thinking and human ingenuity to overcome barriers.

One of the most inspiring stories to emerge from this program is that of Joy, a participant who has embarked on a transformative journey toward independent living.

When Joy first set her goals for living independently, she focused on mastering everyday tasks like showering and brushing her teeth – activities that had been difficult for her during her time in Pathfinder’s supportive housing. Occupational therapy revealed that Joy’s struggles were rooted in executive functioning challenges, including planning, problem-solving and self-control. These obstacles made it hard for her to consistently engage in her daily self-care routine.

Determined to succeed, Joy worked with her occupational therapist to find a creative solution. Drawing on her love of games, Joy adapted Dungeons & Dragons (DnD) into a self-care tool. She customized the game to fit the cognitive needs of her fellow players and introduced side quests that encouraged the pursuit of individual goals. By turning routine tasks into engaging challenges, Joy has made significant progress toward her personal objectives, demonstrating that even the most daunting tasks can be approached with creativity and perseverance. Through DnD, Joy has progressed in her independence, moved out of the supported living waiver home, and is loving life in her own place!

Joy’s innovative approach to overcoming her challenges has transformed her life and inspired Pathfinder to create a unique fundraising event: the Roll for Initiative: Supporting the Pathfinder Independent Living Initiative. This event is a celebration of imagination, resilience and community – a chance for participants to escape reality for a few hours, explore mystical lands and face fantastical creatures, all while supporting the vital work of the Independent Living Initiative.

Join Pathfinder on September 18, 19, 20 or 21 for an unforgettable adventure that supports individuals like Joy in their pursuit of independence. Your participation will directly contribute to the continued success of programs that empower people with developmental disabilities to live more independently and confidently in the communities they love.
